ST. PETERSBURG PIER &
STAR APARTMENTS WIN
2012 NEXT LA AWARDS
MMA’s Star Apartments and St. Petersburg Pier have been awarded 2012 NEXT LA Design Awards from the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The NEXT LA Awards recognize projects to be built in Los Angeles as well as projects by LA-based architects to be built elsewhere.
The Star Apartments design was recognized by the jury for its “gesture of taking people that are living on the street in tents and raising them above the street. There is almost a heroic gesture to it, where it is articulating physically what it is actually doing socially.” Star Apartments is the third collaboration between MMA and the non-profit Skid Row Housing Trust. The building is currently under construction in downtown Los Angeles and will be completed in late Spring 2013.
Of the St. Petersburg Pier design, the jury credited the project as “cleverly nested between architecture, landscape and urbanism and ultimately a good representation of how the disciplines can be rethought.” The Florida pier for the City of St. Petersburg is currently in design.
The AIA LA Design Awards were presented on Monday October 26th at the AIA’s Annual Design Awards Event held at the Broad Stage Theater in the Santa Monica Performing Arts Center.
