SIXTH STREET VIADUCT GROUNDBREAKING
The ground breaking ceremony for the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement project was held on February 20, 2015. The event, held next to the existing Viaduct, featured MMA’s 65-foot long design model of the new design. In his opening remarks, Mayor Eric Garcetti noted that “For so many years, we’ve had our back to the river, now we’re going to embrace it.” Councilmember Jose Huizar, Congressmember Xavier Becerra, State Senator Kevin de Leon, Assemblymember Miguel Santiago were also on hand to support the project. The new Viaduct will replace the existing historic bridge slated to close in 2015, and will connect the Boyle Heights and Arts District neighborhoods and integrate vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian circulation.
