MMA was selected to prepare schemes for the Bergamot Station Art Center, a premiere destination in Los Angeles to discover, experience, and contemplate the edge of art and culture. The proposed Santa Monica Museum of Art acts as a beacon for the new Bergamot Station Art Center Redevelopment. Its dramatic form is defined by sculpted light wells that reach toward the sky. The articulated roofline forms merge into a curvilinear volume that houses the museum’s galleries and echoes the Santa Monica mountains beyond. The new museum is meant to provoke wonder against the backdrop of the existing industrial landscape. Monolithic curvilinear forms bend and deflect in gesture toward the neighboring buildings, and create a fluid, but complementary counterpoint.
