In 2017 the Chicago Housing Authority and the Chicago Public Library collaboratively led an innovative design competition for a series of three new mixed use affordable housing and library projects located on three different sites in Chicago. The Michael Maltzan Architecture (MMA) and Interactive Design Architects (IDEA) team was chosen to submit a design proposal for the Irving Park neighborhood in northwestern Chicago. The design of the mixed-use library and housing project leverages the site’s unique location as a transition point in the city’s urban grid and a new type of combined program in the urban neighborhood.
A generous open library space encourages community interaction through its openness and playful layout of spaces. The continuous glazed storefronts of the library and retail spaces further enliven the pedestrian experience along Elston and the existing alleyway. The visually transparent library is spatially united by the Reading Steps, a multi-functional architectural element that stretches across the center of the open library. Formally, the Reading Steps are a series of steps that bring visitors down to a sunken area at the center of the library. These flexible-use steps are simultaneously seating and shelving, and can accommodate many activities throughout the course of the day and seasons. The dynamic library activity inside radiates out to the neighborhood to the north and south, inviting residents, library patrons, and neighbors into the building.
The building’s fourth through seventh floors include generously sized one and two bedroom apartments that integrate abundant natural light and ventilation, creating welcoming, healthy and secure homes for new residents. Unique residential amenities are concentrated on the building’s third level. These spaces that support health and wellness for all residents include a community room; manager’s suite with meeting room; and indoor workout area which extends to an open-air exercise terrace; extensive raised-bed community garden; covered outdoor seating areas; and children’s play area.
