ALTERNATE GROUND /
HEINZ ARCHITECTURAL
CENTER

Michael Maltzan: Alternate Ground, on view in the Heinz Architectural Center in June of 2012, was the first complete exhibition dedicated to Michael Maltzan Architecture.

The title is a reference to MMA’s interest in architecture’s ability to both dig into and extend above the earth’s surface. A series of almost 200 models documented the processes through which the studio studies issues of shape, material, and the adjacency of component parts allowing visitors a glimpse into the evolution of MMA’s projects. An animation comprised drawings of twelve key projects and further emphasized the idea of “ground.”

A full-color catalogue was produced and includes texts by Ai Weiwei and Mirko Zardini, with full accounts of the twelve projects on view. The exhibition was curated by Raymund Ryan.
