SIXTH STREET VIADUCT
LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA 2021

Sixth Street Viaduct was created for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. The installation responds to the question, “How Will We Live Together,” asked by curator Hashim Sarkis.

Michael Maltzan Architecture has contributed a display of the new Los Angeles Sixth Street Viaduct, a transformative infrastructure project for the City of Los Angeles and the single largest bridge project in its history. On display in the Emerging Communities section in the Arsenale are two primary elements connecting these contextual ideas of design, engineering, community, history, and transportation infrastructure. Suspended from above, the 1:360 scale architectural model highlights the bridge’s unique connective elements and shows the entire 3,600 foot span of the viaduct. Three short videos highlight the physical, historical, and cultural context of the Viaduct. The first monitor displays historical images of the Viaduct, representations of the original structure in film and popular culture, and images from Michael Maltzan Architecture’s submission to the international competition for project. A second monitor shows photographs by Iwan Baan of the people, buildings, and neighborhoods connected by the Viaduct, and a third displays construction images of the new bridge, from the groundbreaking through the present day.
